CUSTOM TAILIGHTS

CUSTOM TAILIGHTS
EXP TAILLIGHTS by Nathen Skinner

First remove the lens from the car, it should pop off. If you cant remove the lens, remove the entire light.

Before you can put words or designs on your light you will have to remove all the little black lines from the lens.
To do this I used gear oil and a wire wheel on the drill, rub the oil all over the lens (this will protect the plastic) then lightly go over the lens with the wire wheel, be careful not to damage the lens. After most of the lines are gone you can use fine grit sandpaper and the oil to get what's left. Then use a 1500-2000 grit and the oil to "wetsand" the lens (again the oil will keep the paper from messing up the lens while allowing you to remove any scratches).

Once the black lines are gone (there may still be ridges were the lines were this is ok), wash off the oil and start dreaming up the design. After you figure out what you want make a stencil of it, after you have a stencil. transfer it to a piece of laminating paper (found at office stores) this will give you a sticker of your design place the sticker on the lens then mask off what you don't want to paint. For painting I used brake caliper paint because it's tough and can withstand the heat and the elements, paint the lens (I used black paint and just painted the entire light so everything would match). After the paint is dry carefully pull of the stencil stickers (I used the same stencil on both sides so they are exactly the same and I only had to make one stencil). If using one stencil repeat on the other side.

Your done put the lens backs on the car.
After your done put the stickers on a piece of wax paper to keep them, then if a lens breaks you can do the new lens.

Also instead of stripping the lens you can also pop out that section (its glued in), go to the hardware store and buy a reflector and cut it to fit then put on your stencil.

I'm sure there's other and probably better ways to do this but, this is how I did it and it can give you ideas on how to make you own.

Variation. draw the circles on the lense then carefully cut them out. go buy some PVC pipe of the same as the circles, cut it into 1" long pieces and glue them in behind the holes you cut in the lense.then glue the lense pieces you cut out on to the PVC (you can also buy new lense material).when this is done.you can paint the lights how ever you want(you can also cover the lights in a thin layer of filler first then sand smooth and paint) when you are finished you should have sunk in tail lights (kinda like a corvette)
